Unlike Woman (A Helmet is NOT a sometime thing)

As many of you know I've been training for the Danskin Triathlon. On Sunday at about 6:30pm I set off to do a "brick" - about 9 miles on the bike and then 1.5 to 2 miles run. I set off on my usual route and got about half a mile away when I realized I had forgotten to put on my bike helmet. I toyed with doing the ride without it: I would just be "extra-careful" but decided against it. I rode my Team Danskin trainer's bike in Central Park for about 6 miles on Wednesday and forgot the helmet and felt really weird about it. I knew I wouldn't have a good ride if I didn't have it on and I didn't feel like cheating disaster twice. So I went back to put it on and decided I would go down Park Avenue near my house which is what I did.

Thank God I did because approximately 5 miles into the ride a car took liberties with the traffic signals and planted itself right infront of my green-lighted intersection. I know I lost consciousness for a time. When I woke the cops were there as well as the ambulance. Off to the hospital emergency room....

7 hours later and I was home recuperating. After numerous X-rays and a CT-scan the doctors have said "nothing appears to be broken". While the literature they sent home with me says that hairline fractures can sometimes show up days later, I have high hopes that I'm A-Okay and very lucky. It's been two days now and I'm sore, sore, SORE: Ribs (which really started aggravating me today), right wrist, left shoulder (getting a nice bruise) and a little road rash here and there. But probably not broken.

I am going stir crazy though. I haven't had a bath in two days because I'm not sure if I can dress myself properly or wash my hair or anything which really sucks. And the doctors pretty strongly advised against doing the Danskin....I'll keep you posted.

I have no idea where the offending driver is or what the status of the police report is which is part of the reason I'm not saying too much here. I don't even know what the condition of my bicycle is. I'm supposed to call the Officer who was at the scene tomorrow night to see if he'll release it. I vaguely remember a woman with dark, curly hair saying something like "I just fell down" or something similarly idotic. I do remember telling the police officer that there was a car that cut me off. I think I also told him I had a green light. Again, I'll keep you posted.

Regardless, I'm feeling pretty good about being alive. I may never win the lottery but you can't say that I'm not lucky. And Gershwin, just so you know, I'm not sure a woman is a sometime thing.
