Hanging out my Shingle

I've been freelancing as a business consultant/ producing consultant on and off for the last 6 or so years. Since I sold my last production company I've been working as a sole proprietor for the last 2 years so I could figure out what I'm going to do next.

It's a big decision. Do I LLC or Incorporate? S-Corp or C-Corp? Is it better to be an S-Corp in NY and how does that affect my future work in other states namely Texas where I'm hopefully filming a movie in the next few years? Etc. Etc. There are big questions that every new business asks itself and I have discovered I am no exception as I look at my new business. I thought on some level it would be easier deciding since my vote is the only one that counts.

The last few months, I've determined that it's time to set up my own shingle again as a Producing Consulting/ Management business. You've seen the website if you've read this blog. I've been all about the marketing and identity and that has been, much to my surprise, the easy part.

There are tax implications with starting a company, federal and, in my case, state requirements. The nuances of an LLC versus an S-Corp can have a big impact on the company's bottom line. The kicker is...everybody has a different opinion on what the best choice is.

After some serious soul-searching and research I have made my decision. Today, I'm going legit. Thanks to the help of my fantastic accountant and this Easy Online Company Formation site I should be well on my way to being my very own S-Corp by 5:00 today.

Woohoo!
